Six Sigma is one of the most upcoming and worldwide trusted PM methodologies. It allows various businesses to ensure that the accuracy and speed of implementing a process reach the highest level so any waste and defects are eliminated or minimized. The methodology is widely used in manufacturing of various goods to determine the best way to produce a product or operate a system while reaching cost-effectiveness and minimization of waste during the manufacturing process. Other organizations also use the principles of the methodology to plan and develop improvement projects.
Traditionally, Six Sigma uses the DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control) method that allows investigating a problematic process, product or system and generating an effective solution with the highest probability (99.99%) of successful implementation. The method is also known as the Six Sigma project lifecycle. Its ultimate purpose is to define and implement a range of effective improvements to a product/process/system in order to create a new operating environment with minimized waste and eliminated defects.
Implementation of a Six Sigma based project can be done by referring the DMAIC method. It means that such a project can be implemented in five key phases, such as follows:
- Define
- Measure
- Analyze
- Improve
- Control
Each of the phases consists of certain high-level processes. For example, the Define phase has four processes including Prioritizing Opportunities, Selecting a Project, Developing the Project Charter, and Recruiting a Team. For convenience, it is recommended to divide the processes of every Six Sigma phase into a range of simple, measurable and manageable tasks. Each of the tasks will represent the smallest amount of work to be completed by the project team. In such a way, the manager and team of your Six Sigma driven project will get a better understanding of the methodology and learn to implement the project "phase by phase", according to the DMAIC method.
We recommend using VIP Task Manager to break down the processes of the Six Sigma phases into simple tasks. VIP Task Manager is a task management program for team collaboration. It features Task Tree for creating templates, task hierarchies and to-do lists for your project. There are also Task List and Calendar that help your team to schedule, manage and track tasks of the project.
Please use the Table of Contents shown below to navigate through the articles describing the phases of the Six Sigma project lifecycle. These articles will also show sample tasks of every phase and explain you how to use VIP Task Manager software to manage tasks of your project.
